Overview
PRESTO is a point-of-sale and business-management system created for hospitality, retail and wholesale operations. It combines day-to-day sales functions with inventory management, operational control, reporting and multi-user workflows.
The project grew beyond a conventional cash-register application into a broader business information system intended to connect sales, stock, documents, employees and management information in one environment.
Main functionality
- point-of-sale and payment workflows
- restaurant tables and kitchen-order management
- bills, invoices and related business documents
- advanced user rights
- networked multi-station operation
- stock and warehouse management
- composite products and recipes
- stocktaking and stock-movement history
- expiry-date tracking
- reporting and sales statistics
Warehouse and inventory
The warehouse module supports multiple warehouses and detailed stock movements. It includes stocktaking, transfers between warehouses, expiry-date management and configurable stock-dispensing strategies such as FIFO, LIFO and expiration-date-based processing.
Technical perspective
PRESTO represents a long-running software-engineering project in which usability, transactional consistency, network operation and extensibility are equally important. The system has to support quick interaction at the point of sale while simultaneously maintaining accurate business and inventory data.
The project has provided practical experience with the design and evolution of a substantial desktop business application, database-backed workflows, reporting, hardware integration and deployment in real operating environments.
