3D Scanning

Terrestrial laser scanning, scan registration, point-cloud processing and digital documentation of real-world environments.

Overview

My work in 3D scanning focuses on the complete terrestrial laser-scanning workflow: planning, acquisition, registration, processing, analysis and visualization of point-cloud data.

A recurring theme is the practical balance between accuracy, point density, acquisition time and data volume. Scanner placement and overlap have a major influence on the quality of the final dataset, especially in complex architectural environments.

Areas of interest

  • terrestrial laser scanning
  • scan planning and station placement
  • target-based registration
  • cloud-to-cloud registration
  • ICP-based alignment
  • point-cloud cleaning and segmentation
  • accuracy evaluation
  • cultural-heritage documentation
  • visualization and further geometric processing

Tools

Typical workflows use Leica terrestrial laser scanners together with Leica Cyclone / Register 360, CloudCompare and MeshLab.
